For a long time I never bothered with GPs. I saw specialists on a regular basis and didn’t think I needed one. The one time I did require a GP connection was to sign off on my ability to drive when I went for my Learner’s license. Anyway cut to 5 years later, I needed to renew my license and Service NSW was asking for the same sign off – which was already a pretty annoying given my cerebral palsy hadn’t changed. I had moved to a different city by then and hadn’t bothered to find someone to be my regular GP. I tried my luck with a GP close to my work only to find out that he wouldn’t sign off on anything because he didn’t know my condition, which was frustrating because the original GP didn’t know my condition either and you’d hope maybe being a doctor he should know cerebral palsy. I ended up having to book a tele-health appointment with the original doctor who was able to sign off on it again but at this point because both appointments weren’t bulk-billable I was close to 200 dollars out of pocket. All to have a doctor confirm I was able to do what I had been doing for the last 5 years. Anyway my recommendation is get a GP ideally one that does bulk billing, they’re not necessarily going to know your CP better than you but the connection will come in handy at some point and save you some money and faffing around.
